Electronic Laboratory Reporting (ELR) is the automated sending of identifiable laboratory results directly from a Laboratory Information System (LIS) to the local public health department. The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is promoting ELR for all Chicago area hospitals and laboratories as a way to improve the completeness, timeliness, and accuracy of mandated disease reporting to public health.

ELR Solutions is a multi-disciplinary team formed to collaborate with the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) in development of an electronic laboratory reporting (ELR) application. Currently, CDPH provides a secure web interface for manual entry of notifiable disease data. Since ELR is more complete, timely, and efficient compared to manual reporting, CDPH has partnered with the ELR Solutions team to develop software that will process electronic patient data, automate detection of notifiable diseases, and provide secure messaging of these reports to CDPH.
